The U.S. national government and the bureaucratic spending process work on a financial year cycle running from October 1 to 12 PM September 30. On the off chance that Congress neglects to pass the entirety of the spending bills including the yearly bureaucratic financial plan or proceeding with goals expanding spending past the finish of the monetary year; or if the president neglects to sign or vetoes any of the individual spending charges, certain unimportant elements of the legislature might be compelled to stop because of an absence of congressionally-approved subsidizing. The outcome is an administration shutdown. The Current Border Wall Shutdown of 2019 The latest government shutdown, and the third of the Donald Trump administration started on December 22, 2018, when Congress and the White House neglected to concur on the incorporation in a yearly spending bill of $5.7 billion mentioned by President Trump for the development of an extra 234 miles of fencing to be added to the current security hindrance along the U.S. fringe with Mexico. On January 8, with no limit to the stalemate in sight, President Trump took steps to pronounce a national crisis enabling him to sidestep to support the fringe fencing. Be that as it may, by January 12, what had become the longest enduring government shutdown in U.S. history had covered nine of the 15 government official branch offices, and left more than 800,000 bureaucratic specialists including Border Patrol officials, TSA operators, and air traffic controllers-either working without pay or sitting at home on leave. Waste started accumulating and guest security turned into an issue at national stops as park officers had been sent home. Despite the fact that Congress had passed a bill on January 11 giving possible full back compensation to the representatives, the strain of missed checks became obvious.â In a broadcast address on January 19, President Trump offered a proposition he trusted would take Democrats back to the bartering table to haggle on a movement change for fringe security bargain that would end the then 29-day-long government shutdown. The president offered to back migration strategies Democrats and had since a long time ago mentioned, including a three-year restoration of the DACA-Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals-program as an end-result of endorsement of a changeless $7 billion fringe security bundle, including $5.7 billion for the outskirt divider. DACA is an at present terminated movement arrangement authorized by President Obama permitting qualified people who were brought to the United States illicitly as kids to get an inexhaustible two-year time of conceded activity from expulsion and become qualified for a work grant in the U.S. Not exactly an hour after the presidentââ¬â¢s address, Democrats dismissed the deal since it neglected to offer perpetual insurance for the DACA settlers and on the grounds that it despite everything included cash for the outskirt divider. Democrats again requested that President Trump end the shutdown before arrangements proceeded. On January 24, Government Executive magazine announced that dependent on pay information from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the then 34-day-long fractional government was costing U.S. citizens more than $86 million per day in back compensation vowed to more than 800,000 furloughed laborers. A Temporary Agreement Reached On January 25, President Trump declared that an understanding had been reached between his office and Democratic pioneers in Congress that would incidentally revive the legislature until February 15 without the consideration of any subsidizing for development of extra fringe fencing. The understanding additionally given that every single government representative influenced by the shutdown would get full back compensation. As per the President, the deferral would take into account further arrangements on financing of the outskirt divider, which he said stayed a need to national security. At long last, the President expressed that if financing for the fringe divider was not consented to by February 15, he would either restore the administration shutdown or proclaim a national crisis permitting him to reallocate existing asset for the reason. In any case, on February 15, the president marked a trade off spending charge turning away another shutdown. That day, he gave a National Emergency Proclamation diverting $3.5 billion from the Defense Departmentââ¬â¢s military development financial plan to the development of new fringe divider. Under the details of the Antideficiency Act, the shutdown might not have been legitimate in any case. Since the legislature had the $5.7 billion expected to assemble the fringe divider, the shutdown had been founded on an issue of political belief system as opposed to an issue of financial need, as required by the law. The Ghosts of Shutdowns Past Somewhere in the range of 1981 and 2019, there were five government shutdowns. While the initial four went generally unnoticed by anyone however the government representatives influenced, the American individuals shared the torment during the last one.â 1981: President Reagan vetoed a proceeding with goals, and 400,000 government representatives were sent home at lunch and advised not to return. A couple of hours after the fact, President Reagan marked another form of the proceeding with goals and the laborers were back grinding away the following morning. 1984: With no affirmed financial plan, 500,000 government laborers were sent home. A crisis spending bill had them all back grinding away the following day. 1990: With no financial plan or proceeding with goals, the administration closes down during the whole three-day Columbus Day weekend. Most laborers were off in any case and a crisis spending bill marked by President Bush throughout the end of the week had them back busy working Tuesday morning. 1995-1996: Two government shutdowns starting on November 14, 1995, lingered various elements of the government for different periods of time until April of 1996. The most genuine government shutdowns in the countries history came about because of a spending stalemate between Democratic President Clinton and the Republican-controlled Congress over subsidizing for Medicare, instruction, the earth, and general wellbeing. 2013: For 17 dreary days, from October 1 through October 16, the lasting contradiction among Republicans and Democrats in Congress over spending constrained a fractional shutdown that saw in excess of 800,000 government representatives furloughed, U.S veterans bolted out of their own war dedications, and a large number of guests drove away from national parks. Unfit to pass a traditional yearly financial plan, Congress thought about a proceeding with goals (CR) that would have kept up subsidizing at current levels for a half year. In the House, Tea Party Republicans joined corrections to the CR that would have postponed execution of President Obamaââ¬â¢s medicinal services change lawââ¬Obamacareââ¬for one year. This altered CR got no opportunity of going in the Democrat-controlled Senate. The Senate sent the House a ââ¬Å"cleanâ⬠CR without any corrections, however Speaker of the House John Boehner would not permit the spotless CR to go to a vote of the House. Because of the stalemate over Obamacare, no subsidizing CR was passed by October 1-the finish of the governmentââ¬â¢s 2013 financial year-and the shutdown started. As the shutdown tranquilize on, general assessment of Republicans, Democrats and President Obama started to dive and, to exacerbate the situation, the U.S. was set to arrive at its obligation limit on October 17. Neglecting to pass enactment raising as far as possible by the cutoff time could have constrained the legislature to default on its obligation without precedent for history, setting the installment of government benefits at risk for being postponed. On October 16, confronted with as far as possible emergency and expanding open appall with Congress, Republicans and Democrats at long last conceded to and passed a bill briefly reviving the administration and expanding as far as possible. Unexpectedly, the bill-driven by the governmentââ¬â¢s need to decrease spending-likewise burned through billions of dollars, including a tax-exempt endowment of $174,000 to the widow of a perished representative. The Costs of Government Shutdowns The first of the two government shutdowns in 1995-1996 kept going just six days, from November 14 to November 20. Following the six-day shutdown, the Clinton organization discharged a gauge of what the six days of a lingered government had cost. Lost Dollars: The six-day shutdown cost citizens about $800 million, including $400 million to furloughed government representatives who were paid, yet didn't answer to work and another $400 million in lost income in the four days that the IRS requirement divisions were closed.Medicare: Some 400,000 recently qualified Medicare beneficiaries were postponed in applying for the program.Social Security: Claims from 112,000 new Social Security candidates were not prepared. 212,000 new or substitution Social Security cards were not given. 360,000 office visits were denied. 800,000 cost free calls for data were not answered.Healthcare: New patients were not acknowledged into clinical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) clinical focus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stopped sickness observation and hotline calls to NIH concerning ailments were not answered.Environment: Toxic waste tidy up work at 609 locales halted as 2,400 Superfund laborers were sent home.La w Enforcement and Public Safety: Delays happened in the preparing of liquor, tobacco, guns, and explosives applications by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; deal with in excess of 3,500 chapter 11 cases purportedly was suspended; wiping out of the enlistment and testing of government law requirement authorities reporte cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874112374231041080.post-27720736036793929212020-08-22T15:37:00.001-07:002020-08-22T15:37:24.385-07:00Last Sacrifice Chapter EighteenI SPRANG UP FROM THE bed, diminished that I didn't fall over. My head despite everything hurt, except I not, at this point felt tipsy, which ideally implied I truly had avoided a blackout. Looking at a morning timer as I left Sonya's room, I saw that I'd been in Lissa's mind for a couple of hours. Her test had been undeniably more broad than I'd understood. In the front room, I found a practically humorous sight. Victor and Robert remained there, in the tissue, taking in the encompassing subtleties. Indeed, even Robert appeared to be with us intellectually this time. Just, while Victor was contemplating everything in his computing way, Robert's consideration was fixed on Sonya. His eyes irritated out in shock. Dimitri, in the mean time, hadn't modified his situation close Sonya or set aside the stake at her throat. It was obvious from his position and attentive eye, notwithstanding, that he viewed the siblings as another danger and was tryingââ¬impossiblyââ¬to remain prepared for everything. He appeared to be calmed to see me and have some reinforcement. Sonya had gone totally still inside her chains, which I didn't care for by any means. It made me think she was arranging something. Her red eyes limited. The entire circumstance was tense and perilous, yet a little piece of me felt priggish fulfillment as I considered Victor all the more intently. The fantasy gatherings had been beguiling. Similarly as I could move my appearance in dreams, Victor had made himself look more grounded and more advantageous in those visits than he really was, all things considered. Age, infection, and life on the run were causing significant damage. Dim shadows lined his eyes, and his turning gray hair appeared to be more slender than it had a month back. He looked worn down and tired, however I realized he was as yet perilous. ââ¬Å"So,' I stated, hands on hips. ââ¬Å"You figured out how to discover us.' ââ¬Å"There's one lake in this town,' said Victor. ââ¬Å"One blue house. Perhaps you experienced difficulty with those headings, however for all of us, it wasn't unreasonably troublesome.' ââ¬Å"Well, in case you're so shrewd, what's your arrangement now?' I inquired. I was attempting to slow down as I quickly pondered what my arrangement was. I'd needed to catch Victor and Robert yet didn't have the foggiest idea how. Since we needed to part our consideration among them and Sonya, Dimitri and I was unable to collaborate. I wished we had extra chain. Beside genuinely repressing the siblings, we would likewise explicitly need to control their hands to diminish their capacity to utilize enchantment. ââ¬Å"Since you're so shrewd,' countered Victor, ââ¬Å"I accepted you'd have just gotten the required data.' I signaled toward Sonya. ââ¬Å"She's not actually imminent.' Victor's eyes fell on her. ââ¬Å"Sonya Karp. You've changed since I last observed you.' ââ¬Å"I'm going to execute all of you,' Sonya growled. ââ¬Å"And expend you individually. Typically, I'd start with the human and work up to the Moroi, however â⬠¦' She looked at Dimitri and me, her face loaded with rage. ââ¬Å"I think I'll spare both of you for last and drag out your torment.' She stopped and humorously included, ââ¬Å"You've irritated me the most.' ââ¬Å"Do all Strigoi experience some training camp and gain proficiency with no different dangers? It's a marvel you don't snicker as well.' I turned around to Victor. ââ¬Å"See? Not so natural. We've had a go at everything. Beating it out, tormenting it out. Sydney experienced the names of every one of her family members. No response.' Victor read Sydney in detail just because. ââ¬Å"So. Your pet Alchemist.' Sydney didn't move. I realized she must be frightened of confronting somebody who was both a vampire and a hazardous lawbreaker. I needed to give her focuses for meeting his gaze unflinchingly. ââ¬Å"Young,' Victor considered. ââ¬Å"But obviously she would be. I envision it's the main way you could control her into this little caper.' ââ¬Å"I'm here by decision,' answered Sydney. Her demeanor remained quiet and certain. ââ¬Å"No one controlled me.' Abe's coercion wasn't generally applicable right now. ââ¬Å"Look, on the off chance that you needed to continue tormenting me with your not-interesting remarks, you could have recently continued attacking my fantasies,' I snapped. ââ¬Å"If you don't have anything helpful to offer, at that point leave and let us hold up until hunger debilitates Sonya.' And by leave, I implied: stupidly believe you're going to leave with the goal that I can thump your heads together and drag you back to the gatekeepers. ââ¬Å"We can help,' said Victor. He contacted his sibling softly on the arm. Robert winced, snapping his eyes from Sonya to Victor. ââ¬Å"Your techniques were bound to fizzle. On the off chance that you need answers, there's just a single way toââ¬Ã¢â¬Ë Sonya made her turn. Dimitri was still right close to her, however he'd likewise been watching out for all of us. What's more, obviously, I'd been totally centered around the Victor dramatization also. It was presumably the best opening Sonya could have sought after. With insane Strigoi quality, she kicked up from the seat. The chain was folded over her again and again, yet her snappy development and quality were sufficient to snap the chain in two spots. The rest despite everything surrounded her, yet I realized completely well even one opening was sufficient for her to in the end break out. Occupied or not, Dimitri was on her instantly, and after a second, so was I. She was thrashing in the seat, utilizing all of her quality and speed to shake off the chains. On the off chance that she got free, I realized she'd set up another savage battle. Dimitri and I met eyes quickly, and I realized we were thinking very similar things. To begin with, how were we going to re-control her? The chain could most likely be bounce back, however we'd have to loosen up it and begin once again, which would be close to unimaginable. We additionally both knew he and I probably won't have the option to take as much time as is needed, and now we had honest people aroun d. They couldn't battle, yet Sonya may have the option to utilize them to further her potential benefit by one way or another. Everything we could do was attempt to hold her down. Holding her against a level surface like the floor would have been a lot simpler than the awkward chair. It shook as she battled against us, and we attempted to get a decent situation on the seat. Dimitri had his stakeâ⬠I'd put mine down earlierââ¬and he raked it against her skin, giving us some favorable position in the battle. She shouted in wrath, and I clung to the expectation we may exhaust her. Most likely not. We'd break first. My hurting head was verification enough that I wasn't in top condition. I saw a blaze of development in my outskirts, setting off new cautions. Robert Doru was making a beeline for usââ¬and he had a silver stake in his grasp. The sight was so strange and startling that I was delayed to caution Dimitri. At the point when my slow brain abruptly kicked back to life, it was past the point of no return. ââ¬Å"No!' I screamed, seeing Robert raise the stake. ââ¬Å"Don't murder her!' Dimitri turned and saw Robert at that point, however there was nothing he could do. Dimitri and I had made the ideal chance. We were keeping Sonya still, and with her chest helpless, Robert had a spotless shot. Quickly, I thought about what to do. In the event that I halted him, I'd discharge Sonya. In the event that I didn't stop him, he may slaughter our lone possibility at discovering whoâ⬠Past the point of no return. The stake plunged down with a power that flabbergasted me. Lissa had a troublesome time marking Dimitri, and I'd accepted the equivalent would be valid for somebody like Robert, who was more seasoned and appeared to be so delicate. In any case, no. He despite everything needed to utilize two hands, yet the stake went immovably into Sonya's chest, penetrating her heart. Sonya let out an extreme shout. A splendid, blinding white light unexpectedly occupied the room, similarly as an inconspicuous power impacted me away. I hit a stopping point, my cerebrum scarcely enrolling the agony. The little house shook, and with one hand, I attempted to snatch something and support myself. I crushed my eyes shut yet could even now observe starbursts. Time eased back. My pulse eased back. Thenââ¬it all halted. Everything. The light. The tremors. I inhaled typically. Everything was peaceful and still, as if I'd envisioned what had simply occurred. I squinted, attempting to bring my eyes once again into center and evaluate the circumstance. I gave a valiant effort to scramble awkwardly to my feet and saw Dimitri was doing likewise. He appeared as though he'd likewise been thumped over yet had gotten the divider for help, instead of crushing into it. Robert was lying level out on the floor, and Victor surged over to support him. Sydney just stood solidified. What's more, Sonya? ââ¬Å"Unbelievable,' I murmured. Sonya was still in the rocker, and from the manner in which she was sitting back, clearly she'd been impacted by a similar power that had hit all of us. The chains were still around her, however she'd quit battling. On her lap was the silver stake Robert had held just minutes back. Sonya figured out how to squirm a hand out of the chain, only enough for her fingers to brush against the stake's surface. Her eyes extended with wonderââ¬eyes that were a rich, purplish blue. Robert had breathed life into Sonya Karp back. She was no longer Strigoi. When Lissa had spared Dimitri, I'd felt the enchantment's capacity through the bond, giving me the full and overpowering experience, all things considered, Seeing it now, without the firsthand information gave from Lissa, was still similarly as mind boggling. Victor was distracted with Robert, yet all of us couldn't quit gazing at Sonya in shock. I continued searching for anythingââ¬anythingââ¬that may give the scarcest trace of her past presence. There was none. Her skin bore the run of the mill Moroi whiteness, however it was as yet loaded up with the glow of life, with the faintest tinge of colorââ¬not like the Strigoi, who were totally without shade. Her eyes were ragged looking, yet that was from her quickly framing tears. There was no red ring around her irises. Also, the look in those eyes â⬠¦ there was no brutality or malignance. They were not the eyes of somebody who had quite recently taken steps to slaughter all of us. Her eyes were all stun and dread and disarray. I was unable to tear my look from her. A wonder. Another supernatural occurrence. Significantly subsequent to seeing Lissa reestablish Dimitri, some mystery part of me had trusted I could observer nothing like it once more. That was the means by which marvels worked. Kurtz is a station head working for a Dutch exchanging organization at the finish of the Congo stream. Kurtz, alongside the other station boss who are working at different stations along the Congo waterway, are charged to reap the ample normal assets of the huge African mainland, fundamentally ivory. Marlow, who is an accomplished mariner and waterway vessel pilot, is charged by the organization that utilizes Kurtz to lead an endeavor into the core of the African Congo to discover Kurtz and make sense of why he has quit delivering ivory. Marlow in the long run discovers his man, just to find that Kurtz has slipped into franticness. Kurtz kicks the bucket on the outing pull out of Africa, just to absolute his final words, ââ¬Å"The frightfulness! The repulsiveness! â⬠. Kurtz has likewise written all over his report which he was to go in to his bosses on the circumstance and individuals of the African mainland. The jotting read ââ¬Å"EXTERMINATE ALL THE BRUTESâ⬠. These two expressions hold significant importance in Heart of Darkness, as it portrays how Kurtz truly felt toward the finish of his excursion. Kurtz was portrayed a few times to Marlow previously and during the outing as an alternate sort of man. This provincial period was well known for the deception of the European Empires, who in their twofold edged strategic spreading the way of life of the white man while reaping assets of the outside terrains of the world, appallingly bombed on the previous and were incredibly effective at the last mentioned. Kurtz should be an alternate sort of man. He was depicted to Marlow just like a genuine helpful, a man who might turn a benefit for the organization as well as simultaneously inspire and humanize the locals of Africa. Marlow was hugely dazzled with Kurtz and was anxious to at long last observe the man for himself. What Marlow discovered couldnââ¬â¢t have been further from reality. When Marlow at long last seeââ¬â¢s Kurtz and his compound just because, heââ¬â¢s stunned to find that the man is nearly held in veneration by the townspeople. He has likewise taken a clear mate from the townspeople. Marlow before long finds that Kurtz utilized his appearance on the vessel and his ownership of guns as a way to wonder the townspeople into tolerating him as their demi god. Marlow in the long run discovers Kurtz, who is at this point incredibly debilitated both genuinely and intellectually, slithering along a wilderness way around evening time towards a town festivity. Marlow cuts him off and concludes that if Kurtz wonââ¬â¢t go with him willingly, he will execute him at that moment. Kurtz yields and permits Marlow to return him to human advancement. The following morning Marlow loads Kurtz onto the pontoon and they start their excursion back to Europe. It is during this stumble on the waterway out of Africa that Kurtz, who is gradually biting the dust, has a mental breakthrough. His final words are ââ¬Å" The repulsiveness! The frightfulness! â⬠. These words are emblematic of what Kurtz felt at understanding that he had become significantly more ââ¬Å"savageâ⬠than the alleged savages. Kurtz depends his papers that he was writing to Marlow. The papers were proposed initially to be a helpful paper on the great Kurtz had accomplished for the residents. Jotted over the papers currently, were the words ââ¬Å"EXTERMINATE ALL BRUTES! â⬠. These words are an incongruity for the mission that Kurtz planned to satisfy. His philanthropic crucial deteriorated into a strategic savagery and abuse. He not, at this point expected to help the individuals of Africa, he planned to execute them and take as much from them as possible. Kurtz at long last uncovered in his last words what is the fate of a man who eagerly strolled into another land figuring he could be a rescuer to a people he thought underneath him. Iââ¬â¢m a very indecisive person and it is really hard for me to make decisions. This is the one thing that I need to really think about and carefully look at the pros and cons to help better myself and my family. Iââ¬â¢ve been going back and forth awhile now between three areas: Official court reporter, freelance court reporter, and closed captioning. These three areas that I find very interesting have many pros and cons to them. I have been researching awhile now about which one would suit me the best and would be beneficial to my family. I am very interested in all three of them. The first thing I have been looking at is an official court reporter. This is where you are employed by the judicial system and have a regular 8-5 job and are usually in the same courtroom and have the same judge. When I first started school this is what I wanted to do. I didnââ¬â¢t want to hear anything else; I just wanted to be in a courtroom. As I got further in school, I started hearing more and more about freelancing and closed captioning. This is where my indecisiveness came into effect. There are so many benefits to each of them, but there is also some downfalls. I started researching becoming an official court reporter. I will, of course, be in a courtroom setting, which is where I definitely want to be. Some of the pros of being and official court reporter is that you usually have the same hours every day and you get the healthcare benefits. The downside, for me, would be being in the same place almost every day, and you have the same judge that you have to follow around. I live in a small town in Kansas and we donââ¬â¢t get much jury trial cases here, so I wouldnââ¬â¢t be getting as many cases around here. Since we are a small town that has only one judge, we have to go around to the surrounding counties and do cases there. This is something I wouldnââ¬â¢t mind because it would be a change of scenery. The next thing I started researching about was freelance court reporter. This is something that quickly got my attention when I first heard about it. When you freelance, you still work for an agency, but youââ¬â¢re allowed to be flexible and take the cases you want. I am all about being flexible. I know that when having a kid that is something that is a must. I want to be around and be able to raise my kids, and not have them shipped off to daycare or elsewhere. So it would be nice to be able to make your own hours, and still take cases when you can. Another pro that I found out with freelancing is that you are somewhere different almost every single time you take a job. I also wouldnââ¬â¢t mind travelling. I really like the change of scenery. Itââ¬â¢s nice to not be in the same place all the time. Some of the cons that I found were healthcare. From what I read you donââ¬â¢t usually get insurance for the agency you work at. I know the NCRA offers insurance, but that can usually get expensive especially if youââ¬â¢re the only one paying for it. Also, what I found out was that there are some depositions very early in the morning or even late at night. I figured it would be a preference on if you wanted to take that specific deposition though. The last con I figured was the travelling. Although I really like to travel, none of that would be paid for. It might be best to work close to home for a few years, and then start to travel. Since my small town doesnââ¬â¢t have a court reporting agency, I researched some. The closest agency is in Manhattan, KS which is about an hour away from where I live. This agency is called Midwest Reporters, Inc and they serve all of the Midwest such as Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. I wouldnââ¬â¢t mind working for this agency and be able to go all over the state of Kansas. Like I said previously, travelling would probably be a little ways down the road in my career. The last thing that has been of interest to me is doing closed captioning. Iââ¬â¢ve just recently became interested in this. Although I would really like to in the court setting, being able to close caption for sporting events and possibly TV shows would be pretty fun. I do have a cousin that works for an agency that specifically covers sporting events. She has done many Royals and Chiefs games. I am a sports fan so this would be quite interesting for me. Some of the pros with this would be being able to work from home. Working from home would be nice, especially when having kids. Also, you would have flexible hours. The only con that I can think of would be not having healthcare. I donââ¬â¢t see anything real cons with doing closed captioning. I wouldnââ¬â¢t be in a court setting, and thatââ¬â¢s one of the main reasons I started school in the first place. I think is something I would maybe start to consider when I get older. My main goal to take away from this paper is to actually figure out what I want to do when I graduate. Now that I see everything written down and the list of all the pros and cons, I feel like I will be more comfortable to be able to decide what I really want to do. In the state of Kansas, doing closed captioning, I can make $70,000-$80,000 a year. If I were to do freelance, it would be anywhere from $18,000-$95,000. That depends on how many jobs I would take also. If I were to be an official reporter, the range would be anywhere between $38,000 and $69,000. I think after researching and making a pros and cons list, I think going down the path of being a freelance reporter would be the way to go for me. Since I live in a small town in Kansas and having just started a family, this would give me flexible hours and a larger case load to be able to support myself and my family. This research paper has really put things into perspective and makes me very comfortable with my decision afte r graduation. cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874112374231041080.post-7325423537892085482020-05-28T03:06:00.001-07:002020-05-28T03:06:03.262-07:00The American Dream and Dick and Perrys downfall - Literature Essay Samples Truman Capoteââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËIn Cold Bloodââ¬â¢, highly contested for its scathing depiction of 1960ââ¬â¢s American society is renowned for its portrayal and characterization of the permeating theme; The American Dream. It seeps into all facets of society and impedes the development of those on the barriers of society, embodied in the criminals Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. The manner in which the American Dream facilitates and even spawns the growth of mental illness and priorities the acquisition of wealth over all, and its connotations with happiness, is what leads the two aforementioned characters to fall victim to its trap and ultimately their own downfall, death. The American Dream is only able to succeed because it capitalizes on the impetus of our own capitalist, money-hungry society, it is used as a tool by the wealthy upper-classes to manipulate and control. The American Dream, an aggressive used-car salesman, grabs society by its shoulders and showers spittle over its adoring face, screaming ââ¬Å"You want this life! You need this life! You want to be happy, and you can be, with a little bit of money! Thatââ¬â¢s all you need, and youââ¬â¢re so close!â⬠And it works, people like Dick and Perry, people on the margins of society, eat up every word and lick the plate clean. It drives their pursuit of wealth through immoral means as they seek their own individualized American Dream, Perry to be surrounded by golden treasures and Dick to be surrounded by the faces of young, subservient girls, and theyââ¬â¢re told they can achieve this. They ââ¬Å"hang paperâ⬠but unsatisfied with the profit, turn to murder. A dramatic iron y, in that the money they make isnââ¬â¢t even enough to afford a competent lawyer whoââ¬â¢s not doing it ââ¬Å"because someone has tooâ⬠, a hidden criticism by Capote on the injustice system, how ââ¬Å"the rich never hang. Only the poor and friendlessâ⬠. The innate desire of any human to achieve happiness is exploited, instead a warped, zombified husk of The American Dream advertises this artificial counterpart through wealth, pushing already broken people to dangerous ends, it puts the flayed corpse of the American Dream on a marble pedestal and tells Dick and Perry that itââ¬â¢s what they need, to be like Herb Clutter, a ââ¬Å"proud manâ⬠who supposedly earned the dream. But life is fast, says the American Dream, to beat it, to win ââ¬Å"the race without a finish lineâ⬠you need to take shortcuts. You need to kill the Clutter family. The American Dream, a paradoxical cycle, traps Dick and Perry inside the confines of its own tornado-esque hubris; t o be happy you must have the dream, to have the dream you must have wealth, to have wealth you must have the dream. This alone, however, is not the effect of the American Dream, for the shattering of such has gargantuan effects on Dick and Perry. Mental illness, not in the context of the depressed and bed-ridden Bonnie Clutter but seeping into the psychopathic, dissociative realm, can be argued to be the devilish offspring of the American Dream, and inevitably, the reasons for its shattering. The unavoidable realization that such a warped and fantastical idea is ultimately unattainable is, in a subtext perpetuated by deeply religious community of Holcomb, is comparable to a young child finding out God doesnââ¬â¢t exist. It is this realization, in conjunction with Perryââ¬â¢s difficult upbringing and Dickââ¬â¢s sociopathy that amalgamates in the form of mental illness. It consumes and controls their every impulse, their every vein, it pulls up their arms like a puppeteer to his plaything and pulls the trigger. Perry, who dreams of ââ¬Å"hot sand, deep-sea diving in fiery-blue water for hidden treasureâ⬠is unable to face the impossibility of the idea. Dick wants to ââ¬Å"go on to collegeâ⬠but it is their own mental state that prevents them, in this way the American Dream is a grotesque paradox. It lures in the vulnerable with promise of a better life, than it swallows them whole and spews them back out again with a debilitating health condition, leaving them groveling at the feet of the drooling abomination for another turn on the merry-go-round. It feeds into the swirl of resentment the characters feel towards the society that actively created the American Dream, and is expressed through the only remaining outlet, crime. Crime which culminates in the incarceration of the pair, leaving them with nothing but the rope from which their lifeless flesh dangles. Capote suggests both Dick and Perry were mere victims of an ineffective rehabilitation system, one that in conjunction with their mental illness, trapped them to die in a cell. The American Dream is ultimately responsible for pushing both Dick and Perry to commit the cardinal sin and inadvertently cause irreparable damage to their own selves. It tells them to make money through any means necessary and allows mental illness to fester, all culminating in their final downfall, the death of the Clutter family and the death of themselves. cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874112374231041080.post-84928464406778115332020-05-19T02:34:00.001-07:002020-05-19T02:34:02.586-07:00What Does the Term Modern Classic Mean in Literature The phrase is a bit of a contradiction, isnââ¬â¢t it? ââ¬Å"Modern classicsâ⬠ââ¬âitââ¬â¢s a bit like ââ¬Å"ancient baby,â⬠isnââ¬â¢t it? Havenââ¬â¢t you ever seen babies sporting wise yet cantankerous looks that made them seem like smooth-skinned octogenarians? Modern classics in literature are like thatââ¬âsmooth-skinned and young, yet with a sense of longevity. But before we define that term, lets start by defining what a work of classic literature is. A classic usually expresses some artistic qualityââ¬âan expression of life, truth, and beauty. A classic stands the test of time. The work is usually considered to be a representation of the period in which it was written, and the work merits lasting recognition. In other words, if the book was published in the recent past, the work is not a classic. A classic has a certain universal appeal. Great works of literature touch us to our very core beingsââ¬âpartly because they integrate themes that are understood by readers from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of experience. Themes of love, hate, death, life, and faith touch upon some of our most basic emotional responses. A classic makes connections. You can study a classic and discover influences from other writers and other great works of literature. Thatââ¬â¢s as good a definition of a classic as youââ¬â¢ll find. But what is a ââ¬Å"modern classic?â⬠And can it meet all of the above criteria? Something Thats Modern Can Be Familiar ââ¬Å"Modernâ⬠is an interesting word. It gets tossed around by cultural commentators, architectural critics, and suspicious traditionalists. Sometimes, it just means ââ¬Å"nowadays.â⬠For our purposes here, letââ¬â¢s define modern as ââ¬Å"based in a world the reader recognizes as familiar.â⬠So although ââ¬Å"Moby Dickâ⬠is certainly a classic, it has a hard time being a modern classic because many of the settings, lifestyle allusions, and even moral codes seem dated to the reader. A modern classic, then, would have to be a book written after World War I, and probably after World War II. Why? Because those cataclysmic events shifted the way the world sees itself in irreversible ways. Certainly, classic themes endure. Romeo and Juliet will still be foolish enough to kill themselves without checking for a pulse thousands of years from now. But readers who live in a post-WWII era are concerned with much that is new. Ideas about race, gender, and class are shifting, and literature is both a cause and an effect. Readers have a broader understanding of an interconnected world where people, pictures, and words travel in all directions at warp speed. The idea of ââ¬Å"young people speaking their mindsâ⬠is no longer new. A world that has witnessed totalitarianism, imperialism, and corporate conglomeration cannot turn back that clock. And perhaps most importantly, readers today bring a hardened realism that stems from contemplating the enormity of genocide and perennially living on the edge of self-destruction. Modern Themes and Styles Shift With the Times These hallmarks of our modernism can be seen in a wide variety of works. A glance at previous winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature brings us Orhan Pamuk, who explores conflicts in modern Turkish society; J.M. Coetzee, best known as a white writer in a post-apartheid South Africa; and Gà ¼nter Grass, whose novelà ââ¬Å"The Tin Drumâ⬠à is perhaps the seminal exploration of post-WWII soul-searching. Beyond content, modern classics also demonstrate a shift in style from earlier eras. This shift began in the early part of the century, with luminaries such as James Joyce expanding the reach of the novel as a form. In the post-war era, the hardened realism of the Hemingway school became less of a novelty and more a requirement. Cultural shifts have meant that obscenities once viewed as outrageous are commonplace. Sexual ââ¬Å"liberationâ⬠may be more of a fantasy than a reality in the real world, but in literature, the characters certainly sleep around a lot more casually than they used to. In tandem with television and movies, literature has also shown its willingness to spill blood on the pages, as violent horrors that once would not even have been alluded to now become the basis of best-selling novels. Philip Roth is one of Americaââ¬â¢s preeminent authors of modern classics. In his early career, he was best known forà ââ¬Å"Portnoyââ¬â¢s Complaint,â⬠in which young sexuality was explored in unprecedented ways. Modern? Certainly. But is it a classic? It can be argued it is not. It suffers the burden of those who go firstââ¬âthey seem less impressive than those who come after. Young readers looking for a good shocker that reveals all no longer rememberà ââ¬Å"Portnoyââ¬â¢s Complaint.â⬠Great Examples of Modern Classics One modern classic is Jack Kerouacââ¬â¢sà ââ¬Å"On the Road.â⬠This book is modernââ¬âitââ¬â¢s written in a breezy, breathless style, and itââ¬â¢s about cars and ennui and easy morality and vigorous youth. And itââ¬â¢s a classicââ¬âit stands the test of time. For many readers, it has a universal appeal. Another novel that often appears atop the contemporary classics lists is Joseph Hellerââ¬â¢sà ââ¬Å"Catch-22.â⬠This certainly meets every definition of an enduring classic, yet it is thoroughly modern. If WWII and its ramifications mark the boundary, this novel of the absurdities of war stands definitively on the modern side. In the science fiction aisleââ¬âa modern genre in itselfââ¬âââ¬Å"A Canticle for Leibowitzâ⬠à by Walter M. Miller Jr. is perhaps the modern classic, post-nuclear holocaust novel. It has been copied endlessly, but it holds up as wellââ¬âor better than any other work in painting a stark warning of the dire consequences of our path to destruction. cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874112374231041080.post-69659072402196524762020-05-16T10:38:00.001-07:002020-05-16T10:38:05.326-07:00Analysis Of Fahrenheit 451 By Ray Bradbury And Oryx And... Throughout the novels, Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury and Oryx and Crake written by Margaret Atwood, family plays a large role in the flow of the plot. It is throughout both novels where one can see how great an effect familial ties and expression have on the way a single family works and how these workings are a smaller reflection of what society sees as its average. Without family structure and a way for one to express themselves society would not be able to function. What is the true significance and benefits of a family structure? A family structure is essentially a support system where the other party can give or take without having any need to repay the other, a system where on does not seek compensation. A family system isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦To further dwell into this idea we can look at the effects these emotional disconnects had on the temperament of the protagonists and those around them. One can infer that in both instances that neither protagonists coul d fit under the title of normal, even in the universe they lived in they could not be considered normal. Jimmy was detached from society and his true feelings and preferred to go with the flow of society instead of trying to truly fit in while in contrast was tired of going with the flow and wanted to understand why he was not truly happy, in both cases one can see that they do not fit in. This can be seen at a greater degree when DiMarco gives us a reason for Jimmyââ¬â¢s disconnect, ââ¬Å"A division of communities and labor is at the crux of Atwoodââ¬â¢s construction of the boysââ¬â¢ early development. That they grow up naturalized to the idea of separation is symbolized by the very real walls that enclose their communities.â⬠(2). DiMarco describes Jimmy as being isolated from the rest of the world because of the enclosed community he lives in, and this explains things to a large degree. Jimmy is surrounded by a scientific community that is well off compared to thos e outside, heââ¬â¢s sheltered and mentally groomed, and witnessing whatââ¬â¢s around him he knows that itââ¬â¢s not normal, but because he was raised in such a community itââ¬â¢s gets harder and harder for him to distinguish between what is normal and unusual in the way his family works. Identifying stereotypes is not always clear unless one is familiar with the culture that the stereotype implies, however when they are identified it gives the reader an advanced understanding of the text. Two literary works, Benito Cereno and The Yellow Wallpaper use American stereotypes to deepen the plot, but are used in each story in a particularly different way. Literature is a good mechanism to help explore cultural stereotypes and exploit the positive and negative consequences associated with it. In Benito Cereno, the author Herman Melville encaptures a typical American sailor who is blindly trusting of others which leads him to be ignorant to situations around him. Similarly, The Yellow Wallpaper written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman uses an ignorant husband to show the harm it caused his wife, however unint entional. Melville enforces the stereotype throughout the passage to keep readers in the dark with what is actually happening in the story, in comparison to Gilmanââ¬â¢s style of displaying the stereotype at the beginning of the story; which could be easily missed. In a titration of a weak acid with a strong base the titrant is the strong base and the analyte is a weak acid. The reaction that will occur is the direct transfer of protons from the weak acid to the hydroxide ion. The data gathered will be represented on the titration curve, a graph of the volume of titrant being the strong base plotted against the pH . The pH is an indicator of an acids strength. The titration curve can be used to determine the pKa. By reading the graph the equivalence point can be found; which is the point where equal parts acid and base have reacted by knowing this the half-equivalence can be found pH=pKa. Procedure In the experiment pH paper will be used instead of a pH meter. The pH will be determined at the beginning and the end of the titration and the data table will be used to calculate the intermediate values. Before the titration the volume of a drop must be determined. A pipet is completely fill with distilled water. The average number of drops in a mL and the average quantity of a mL represented by on drop is calculated and recorded. Water is added drop by drop to a graduated cylinder from a pipet at the first, second and third mL lines the water drops are recorded. The average number of drops are calculated per mL. The average of the quantity of a mL represented by a drop is also recorded. A data table is set up to represent the trail averages. First 2. 0 mL of unknown acid is measured into graduated cylinder and then poured into a beaker the volume is the recorded. By using a toothpick a drop of acid is placed onto low portion of pH paper, the pH level is recorded. One drop of the phenolphthalein indictor is added to the acid and the color is recorded. The beaker is set on a white sheet of paper before moving on. Next, a well in the 24-well plate is filled with NaOH solution and then sucked up into an empty pipet. The pipet is the held vertically slowly adding drop by drop the NaOH into the beaker of the unknown solution. Drops are added until a color change occurs, changing to a faint pink for at least 30 seconds. A plastic spoon is used to stir after the addition of each drop. The number of drops of NaOH is recorded and the equivalence point is now determined. A drop of the acid is now transferred by toothpick to the high range pH indicator strip. The pH level of the acid is recorded before titration. The contents of the beaker are poured down the drain and all equipment is thoroughly cleaned. The above procedure is repeated twice more, all data is recorded to 4 decimal places for each trail on the data table. The average of the 3 trails is calculated and data is recorded. At the top of the pH column the unknownââ¬â¢s acidââ¬â¢s starting pH level before titration is entered. Next, the pH level of the acid after the titration, at its equivalence point is entered at the bottom of the pH column. The appropriate pH levels for each 2 drop interval is then calculated, by subtracting the initial pH from the final pH and dividing the resulting difference by the number of rows minus 1. This number is then added to the previous pH value. A graph is then made, pH is plotted on the y axis and volume of NaOH added on the x axis. This represents the titration curve. The pH that corresponds with the equivalence point and half equivalence points are located and the pKa is determined for the unknown acid, pH=pKa. The relationship between Ka and pKa is that Ka is the equilibrium constant for the dissociation of a weak acid and pKa is the half-equivalence point where pH=pKa. In addition to the pH, Ka is an indication of an acids strength; pKa = log Ka. B. The UKââ¬â¢s biggest mystery. This band has grown to be popular, mainly by not trying to be popularâ⬠¦.at least it would seem. WU LYF has gotten lots of recognition for playing few shows, turning down interviews, and remaining kind of anonymous. So maybe itââ¬â¢s all a big scheme. Some sort of reverse psychological marketing plot: the less we know, the more we want to know. In remaining unknown to most, this band has made their own label, and produced their records themselves. All these terms could be mixed together somehow, but that would only half describe WU LYFââ¬â¢s sound. One thing to keep in mind is that the band recorded the album themselves in a cathedral in Manchester. So obviously this has a very large, vast reverb to it. The movie tells the story of Frankie Dunn, an aging boxing trainer who happens to be a veteran in the sport and has committed the entirety of his life to the game but with very little to show for his work. Enters Maggie Fitzgerald who walks into Frankieââ¬â¢s gym and asks him to train her but Frankie is skeptical about the matter because he does not rank female boxing highly and he considered her too old at the age of 31 especially without neither experience nor technique to fight in the ring. Frankie also bears great guilt from back in the day when he was training his best friend and most loyal employee who suffered an eye injury that ruled him out of the sport. But Maggie would persist until Frankie accepts to train her and she develops into a strong fighter racking up win after win and a strong emotional bond is formed between the two who are also having off the ring complications with their families. Frankieââ¬â¢s daughter never responds to his frequent letters, his gym is facing closure by the bank and a fighter he was training signs up with a different manager as soon as he gets hot leaving Frankie out to dry. Maggie tries to form a relationship with her mother and sister but their only concern with Maggie is the money that she is making as a boxer and how much of that they could solicit from her after an unfortunate tragedy that she eventually succumbed to in hospital occurred during what would be her final boxing match. Since most students use Hanyu Pinyin for pronunciation, I will henceforth use that. Ma Ying-jiu was president of Taiwan (Republic of China) from 2008 to 2016. Below, I will first give you a quick and dirty way if you just want to have a rough idea how to pronounce the name. Then Iââ¬â¢ll go through a more detailed description, including analysis of common learner errors. Pronouncing Names in Chinese Pronouncing Chinese names correctly can be very hard if you havent studied the language.à Ignoring or mispronouncing tones will just add to the confusion. These mistakes add up and often become so serious that a native speaker would fail to understand. Read more about how to pronounce Chinese names. How to Pronounce Ma Ying-jiu if Youve Never Studied Chinese Chinese names usually consist of three syllables, with the first being the family name and the last two the personal name. There are exceptions to this rule, but it holds true in a vast majority of cases. Thus, there are three syllables we need to deal with. Listen to the pronunciation here while reading the explanation. Repeat yourself! Ma - Pronounce as ma in markYing - Pronounce as Eng in EnglishJiu - Pronounce as Joe If you want want to have a go at the tones, they are low, high-flat and low (or dipping, see below). Note: This pronunciation is not correct pronunciation in Mandarin (though it is reasonably close). To really get it right, you need to learn some new sounds (see below). How to Actually Pronounce Ma Yingjiu If you study Mandarin, you should never ever rely on English approximations like those above. Those are meant for people who dont intend to learn the language! You have to understand the orthography, i.e. how the letters relate to the sounds. There are many traps and pitfalls in Pinyin you have to be familiar with. Now, lets look at the three syllables in more detail, including common learner errors: Maà (third tone) - You are probably familiar with this sound if youve studied Mandarin since its often used to demonstrate tones and is very common. The m is easy to get right, but the a is harder. In general, the a in mark is too far back, but the a in man is too far forward. Somewhere in between. It is a very open sound, too.Yingà (first tone) - As you may have guessed already, this syllable was chosen to represent England and thereby English because they do sound quite similar. The i (which is spelt yi here) in Mandarin is pronounced with the tongue tip closer to the upper teeth than in English. Its as far up and forward ou can go, basically. It can almost sound like a soft j at times. The final can have an optional short schwa (as in English the). To get the right -ng, let your jaw drop and your tongue withdraw.Jiu (third tone) -This sound is tricky to get right. First, j is one of the hardest sounds to get right for native speakers of English. Its a voiceless unaspriated aff ricate, which means that there should be a soft t followed by a hissing sound. This should be pronounced in the same place as x, which means tongue tip touching the lower teeth ridge. iu is an abbreviation of iou. The i tends to overlap with the initial. The remaining part is somewhere in between jaw and joe, but note that the English j is quite different from Pinyin j.. The are some variations for these sounds, but Ma Ying-jiu (é © ¬Ã¨â¹ ±Ã¤ ¹ ) can be written like this in IPA: ma jÃâ¢Ã
â¹ tÃâ¢ju Conclusion Now you know how to pronounce Ma Ying -jiu (é © ¬Ã¨â¹ ±Ã¤ ¹ ). Did you find it hard? If youââ¬â¢re learning Mandarin, dont worry; there arent that many sounds. Once youââ¬â¢ve learnt the most common ones, learning to pronounce words (and names) will become much easier! cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874112374231041080.post-56519179749512422382020-02-26T02:27:00.001-08:002020-02-26T02:27:03.057-08:00Critical Response Comparative Analysis Assignment. (Risk taking, which is the name of the chapter that has the 2 articles) - Essay Example Heroes and heroines are an important people in the whole of human race despite the action a hero does or a heroin does. Heroism has a profound belief in the value of human beings and the dignity of all human race regardless of whether one is a victim or not. This paper will outline and describe various critical analyses on how profound heroism has evidently evolved in the feminism characters and comparisons to that of masculine characters. Miriam Polster, author of the article Eveââ¬â¢s Daughter states that moving beyond stereotypic class of heroes makes s conclude that ordinary men and women are heroes. Heroes in everyday may not receive an accorded acclaim. However, private heroism becomes precise because people see their heroes every day; their heroes are so near as family, co-workers, and neighbors. Heroes have a profound respect for human life, a sense of personal effectiveness, mental courage, and original perspective about the world. People measure heroism in terms of publi city. They think that a hero is that big figure hat is seen every day, affects greatly in to the society, and largely distinguished from others. The fact is, heroism is characterized with basic traits that do not create hierarchy heroic actions but rather appreciation of ordinary guise and heroic elements. Ted Tollefson, author of article, Is a hero really nothing but a Sandwich?, describes many heroic figures like Warren Spahn, Elvis, Kennedy Carl Jung, Ben Hogan among others who have reflected back to Ted and what he intended to become. He wished to have good moves, become an electrifying orator as well as sex symbol. Ted shows how many of the generations have weaknesses for hero-worshipping as try to shed skins of their heroes like serpents. The people reach a point at which they start questioning about their heroes and why they need them. Ted explains that a number of people with heroic figure have common character traits despite the immense cultural differences. However, the re ason as to why they remain heroes is that activity they did of which, everyone else talks about. Ted explains how heroes live a life worth imitation that comes in with a number of benefits of zest and meaningful life (Tollefson, 1993). In the context of Eveââ¬â¢s daughter, you find that women have moved beyond a stereotype class of heroes where many of the women and men who are stated as heroes receive similar acclaims heroism and are accorded classic values of heroism, which are precisely equal to each other. Everyday heroes rise as different and difficult challenges arise too. The manner of tackling difficulties is different from one hero to another. In the context of People who make changes, heroism is a mere common place setting in response to challenges that affect more women that are vulnerable. In this context, inventory of heroism contain heroic characters, which are common to a bigger a number or all of the figures in the heroism state. Most of the heroes respect the hum an dignity and hold one accord for life. Heroism tries to solve challenges without hurting the victimized people. In this manner, the people a hero fights for appreciate him or her for standing in the place of the victims. When the challenge is drawn to the end, celebrations are held. The most enjoys the most is the hero himself for the privileges he gets from the people he or she helped (Polster, 2001). The mental courage in heroes permits them to be aware and accept the way people are in regard to their self-reliance and contribution of cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874112374231041080.post-61971042692403155942020-02-09T19:12:00.001-08:002020-02-09T19:12:03.466-08:00Anton Chekovs A Marriage Proposal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 wordsAnton Chekovs A Marriage Proposal - Essay Example His fundamental focus is on the common man, their lives and problems and the manner in which they deal with them. A similar situation is also observed in the play ââ¬Å"A Marriage Proposalâ⬠. As the name suggests the play is about Ivan Vassiliyitch or Lemov proposing Stepan Stepanovitchââ¬â¢s or Tschubââ¬â¢s daughter Natalia Stepnaovna. Although the play is extremely hilarious and chaotic yet it is observed that Chekov uses the comical aspect of the play to reveal varied human behaviors. Moreover this revelation of characters is reiterated by employing two techniques i.e. the characterââ¬â¢s self-revelation and the explication of the fellow characters. Hence by using this technique Chekov presents the readers with an in-depth character analysis where the reader is enlightened about an individualââ¬â¢s personal perspective as well as the manner in which the other people perceive him. Since the commencement of the play Chekov divides the responsibility of each characterââ¬â¢s introduction amongst the fellow characters as it is also apparent from the fact that rather than using stage directions or any other technique he utilizes dialogues as a mode for explaining the characters of Lemov and Natalia. Lemov represents a young nervous man who is at a point in life where he badly desires to get settled though he is agitated at broaching the subject with the respective brideââ¬â¢s father Tschub. This hesitation is highly apparent in the lines where he says, ââ¬Å"It is not the first time I have had the honor of turning to you for assistanceâ⬠¦ I beg your pardon I am a bit excited Iââ¬â¢ll take a drink of water firstâ⬠(Chekov 499). These lines depict his restlessness as well as provide the readers with an interesting insight about his character that he is a young man at brink of committing himself in a matrimonial relationship and the whole process of asking for Tschubââ¬â¢s daughterââ¬â¢s hand makes him jittery. Lemovââ¬â¢s dialogues also enlighten the readers about the reasons for marrying Natalia as he says, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m coldâ⬠¦the chief thing is to settle mattersâ⬠¦Iââ¬â¢m thirty-five a critical age you might sayâ⬠¦I must live a well regulated lifeâ⬠(Chekov 500). In other words Lemov represents a guy in the prime age of getting married, who has a bad case of nerves about committing himself in a binding relationship. However he is brave enough to be willing to take the plunge because of his stature in life and the requirement of his health i.e. he believes having a wife will cure him from a bad heart. Moreover he is a man who has the habit of either talking in riddles or straying from the actual topic as it is evident from his failed attempts of proposing to Natalia. As time and again he says, ââ¬Å"Only listen until I have finishedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Chekov 502) rather than coming directly to the point he keeps getting in arguments with Natalia because of his lack of being able to steer the conversation in the right direction. Moreover through his assertions the readers realize that he considers himself a self-righteous and a fair man which is again concluded from his assertion, ââ¬Å"my lady I have never appropriated other peopleââ¬â¢s property and I shall permit no one to accuse me of such a thingâ⬠(Chekov 503). His indignation further highlights his personality traits to the readers although Natalia believes otherwise. However it cannot be denied that he is a highly principled individual yet he has a kind heart and has the tendency of eventually giving in to an argument. This is apparent from the lines, ââ¬Å"it was only principle of the thing the property isnââ¬â¢t worth much to me but the principle is worth a great dealâ⬠(Chekov 507). These parallels of opinions about Lemovââ¬â¢s character i.e. his personal opinion about himself and cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874112374231041080.post-91193519984784675472020-01-30T11:56:00.001-08:002020-01-30T11:56:02.845-08:00UNICEF and the Safeguard of Children Rights Essay Example for Free UNICEF and the Safeguard of Children Rights Essay UNICEFââ¬â¢s mission is to advocate for the protection of childrenââ¬â¢s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF is guided in doing this by the provisions and principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNICEF, 2008). Built on varied legal systems and cultural traditions, the Convention is a universally agreed set of non-negotiable standards and obligations (UNICEF, 2006). The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights (Freeman, 1996). In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under eighteen years old often need special care and protection that adults do not (Alston, 1992). The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children have human rights too. The Convention sets out these rights in 54 articles and two Optional Protocols. It spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life (UNICEF, 2006). The four core principles of the Convention are non-discrimination; devotion to the best interests of the child; the right to life, survival and development; and respect for the views of the child (Jasper, 1994). Every right spelled out in the Convention is inherent to the human dignity and harmonious development of every child. The Convention protects childrens rights by setting standards in health care; education; and legal, civil and social services (Jasper, 1994). By agreeing to undertake the obligations of the Convention, national governments committed themselves to protecting and ensuring childrens rights and they have agreed to hold themselves accountable for this commitment before the international community. States parties to the Convention are obliged to develop and undertake all actions and policies in the light of the best interests of the child (Stein, 1998). Most of the governments have incorporated this issue in their development plan courtesy of UNICEF. UNICEFs work for the overall protection of childhood is guided by the principles and standards established by the Convention on the Rights of the Child (Walker, 1999). In advocating to protect childrens rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential, UNICEF helps to change the legal and policy framework of States parties and to improve understanding of the Convention itself at all levels of society (Walker, 1999). Among other activities, UNICEF works in nearly 160 countries to support ratification and implementation of the Convention and the Optional Protocols on the involvement of children in armed conflict and on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography (UNICEF, 2008). UNICEF draws attention to the duties of governments, families, communities and individuals to respect those rights and supports them in doing so. During armed conflict, children are targeted for the worst possible violence and abuse, including abduction, rape and recruitment as child soldiers, and may be forced or coerced to take part in atrocities (Peters, 1997). Because children are among the most affected by conflict they become victims and witnesses of these offences (Brandes, 1999). The lack of accountability for conflict-related crimes against children can leave child victims vulnerable to further violation and abuse. Accountability in post-conflict situations can fulfill a number of important functions (Peters, 1997). It contributes to the process of healing and helps children understand that they are not to blame for what has happened. By investigating and documenting violations committed, accountability processes raise public awareness of the impacts of conflict on children (Dobrish, 1999). Accountability can also help to break the cycle of violence, restore confidence in democracy and the rule of law, and strengthen the legitimacy and authority of the new government (Fox, 1997). In recent years, truth, justice and reconciliation processes have begun to focus specifically on crimes committed against children and have involved children proactively, including through testimony that bears witness to their experiences(Dobrish, 1999). The recent involvement of children and adolescents in providing testimony to international and national courts and truth commissions has demonstrated their unique role as participants and as members of their communities (UNICEF, 2008). But if children are to engage in transitional justice processes their rights must be respected. The review and analysis of emerging good practices on the involvement of children and adolescents in truth, justice and reconciliation processes has brought to light a number of dilemmas. For example, it is recognized that children and adolescents who have been recruited to take part in hostilities are primarily victims of armed conflict. At the same time, many argue that some form of accountability for crimes committed by children is in their best interests and could contribute to processes of reconciliation and reintegration (Teitelbaum, 1999). Mechanisms of accountability for serious violations committed during armed conflict include a wide range of options, such as judicial prosecutions, truth commissions, restorative justice processes and traditional practices (Kurmay, 1996). When children engage in truth, justice and reconciliation processes, new possibilities and new challenges are encountered. In a number of instances, child-friendly procedures have been introduced to safeguard the rights of children who become involved and to support their protection throughout the process (Teitelbaum, 1999). This can help build childrenââ¬â¢s confidence and restore their sense of justice in the social and political order, while also establishing a mechanism of accountability for crimes committed against them. However, many questions remain as to how best to protect the rights of children involved as victims and witnesses in these contexts. Ideally childrenââ¬â¢s participation should strengthen and enhance their protection, and protection measures should enable participation (Kurmay, 1996). In the long term, if children are excluded from transitional processes, they may become frustrated and vulnerable to a continuing cycle of violence, impacting future generations. Failure to address their concerns also wastes the capacity and potential of children and adolescents to serve as catalysts for reconciliation and peace-building within their own communities (Dwyer, 1999). The importance of furthering efforts to support childrenââ¬â¢s involvement in transitional justice processes was identified during an expert discussion on Transitional Justice and Children convened by the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre (IRC) in November 2005. It was proposed that research on children and truth commissions be undertaken, identifying good practices and lessons learned, and recommending strategies to improve and facilitate childrenââ¬â¢s participation in future truth commissions(UNICEF, 2006). Documentation on the role of children in truth commissions was initiated by UNICEF IRC and the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) (UNICEF, 2006). In the course of research underway on children and truth commissions, a number of issues have emerged requiring further research and analysis in order to better understand the potential and the limits of childrenââ¬â¢s participation in transitional justice processes (ACF, 2007). As a result it was decided to initiate an Expert Paper Series on Children and Transitional Justice, addressing a broad range of issues, including judicial accountability, truth-seeking, local, traditional and restorative justice processes, and institutional reform. The Series has helped to build a network for sharing information and expertise, generating discussion and debate among key stakeholders (UNICEF, 2006). These include child protection advocates, government agents, legal experts and academics. The objective of the expert paper series is to improve accountability for crimes against children and to protect the rights of children involved in transitional justice processes (ACF, 2007). Specific papers will document and analyze emerging good practices and lessons learned; evaluate the potential role of children; and anticipate and promote strategies for involving children in future transitional processes(ACF, 2007). It is anticipated that studies undertaken in this series will help to guide the involvement of children in truth, justice and reconciliation processes in post-conflict transition. UNICEF works closely with other human rights bodies such as Human Security Network (HSN). This is an organization which has a long-standing commitment to human rights and to the protection of the most vulnerable both in peace and in times of conflict (Marta, 2007). The Human Security Network plays a decisive role in advancing the implementation of the Convention and of its two Optional Protocols, and in reaffirming, in each and every decision the general principles of non discrimination, best interests of the child, survival and development and participation of the child (UNICEF, 2008). The year 2007 was a landmark year for the protection of childrenââ¬â¢s rights. Indeed, 2007 marked the 18th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (Marta, 2007). As the Convention entered a new stage of adulthood there was an opportunity to celebrate the many important achievements and to critically reflect on the best ways of addressing the challenges ahead. The year was also marked by the General Assembly mid decade review of the follow-up to the Special Session on Children. This process was an important opportunity to reaffirm our shared commitment to children, to advance the Millennium Agenda and further consolidate a world fit for children (Marta, 2007). By 2007, there is a full prohibition of all forms of violence against children in 19 countries (UNICEF, 2008). Legislation was adopted in The Netherlands where law enactment is being supported by a communication plan designed to inform parents and the general public about the legal ban in the lead up to its entry into force. New Zealand has banned the use of reasonable force for parents in the disciplining of their children (ACF, 2008). In a number of other nations draft legislation has been prepared and in others public commitments have been undertaken to ban all forms of violence (ACF, 2008). Once the changes become effective within each of these States, one fifth of the UN Member States would have extended legal protection to prevent violence against children (UNICEF, 2008). UNICEF have recently developed and launched a Handbook on what parliamentarians can do to protect children from violence (UNICEF, 2008). With the participation of parliamentarians and international organizations from more than 100 countries, the launch was an opportunity to anticipate actions parliaments can take to ensure childrenââ¬â¢s freedom from violence, including through their legislative power, and to encourage and oversee government action and to promote the allocation of resources for relevant programmes and interventions(UNICEF, 2008). The Handbook will be translated in national languages and used as an important tool to support follow-up to the UN Study on Violence (Marta, 2007). The Human Security Network have partnered to promote its wide dissemination and use. Naturally, legislation is only meaningful when it is effectively applied. To make law enforcement a reality it is important to engage children in the process of implementation (Masson, 1999). It is for this reason that UNICEF has joined efforts with a number of partners to produce the child friendly version of the UN Guidelines on justice in matters involving child victims and witnesses of crime. The child friendly version was launched at the recent Crime Prevention Commission, in Vienna (UNICEF, 2008). The previous months show the instrumental role played by Professor Pinheiro as a global advocate and a catalyst for social change. But the task is just beginning and only by moving the implementation forward can we build a world free from violence for every child, wherever he or she may live (Marta, 2007). France hosted a major conference in 2006 where a wide range partners endorsed the Paris Principles to stop the recruitment and use of children in adult wars. The document represents the state of the art knowledge in the prevention, protection and reintegration of children recruited by armed forces and groups. And it has a unique potential to ensure the realization of childrenââ¬â¢s rights more broadly (UNICEF, 2008). These milestones are mutually complementary and provide a strategic vision for the future. More importantly, they give us a golden occasion to make a real difference in the lives of children (UNICEF, 2008). At the heart of this process are two closely related dimensions; child participation and the prevention of violence and conflict. Together, they both support the protection of childrenââ¬â¢s rights. A recent study of the Innocenti Research Centre a partner of UNICEF on ââ¬Å"Birth Registration and Armed Conflictâ⬠revealed a few truths. Birth Registration is a permanent and official record of a childââ¬â¢s existence (Marta, 2007). It is a fundamental human right and has strong implications for the enjoyment of other human rights it thus stand as a vivid illustration of the indivisibility of childrenââ¬â¢s rights and a call to always keep a child centered approach. In times of war, birth registration gains a special relevance for child protection, for the prevention of child recruitment, abduction and exploitation, as well as for access to humanitarian assistance (ABA, 2007). Over 25 truth commissions have been convened in various countries over the last decades and several have addressed the experiences of children (ABA, 2007). But the Truth Reconciliation Commission (TRC) for Sierra Leone was the first truth commission to specifically focus on children as victims and witnesses, and to profile childrenââ¬â¢s role as actors in the reconciliation process. It is also the first case where a childrenââ¬â¢s version of the Commissionââ¬â¢s report was prepared (ACF, 2008 ). The childrenââ¬â¢s version of the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report is one example of how children can contribute to community efforts towards reconciliation and transition, while helping to break the cycle of violence and re-establish confidence in the rule of law. UNICEF has had its fair share of challenges in protecting the rights of children. Civil wars especially in Africa have always targeted the children as recruits and this has always been a hurdle for the organization to overcome. Advocacy for children rights in a civic war infested area has not always been easy for them since the lives of the employees are also threatened. Lack of political will in various countries to support the UNICEFââ¬â¢s initiatives has been another monster in children rights protection. Some government agents like the police may be uncooperative in issues of child trafficking, pornography and other related cases hence the risk of failing to catch non-convicted abusers. Other barriers that have been along UNICEFââ¬â¢s path to success are undeveloped, unimplemented and conflicting policies on children rights and responsibilities in many countries. Lack of adequate funds to support their initiatives especially in less developed countries. Traditional practices and taboos among communities are also a major impediment since some encourage abusive practices against children such as communitiesââ¬â¢ warriors, early marriages, and local slave trade among others. Children are members of their communities and by taking part in community action they increase awareness and confidence and build their capacity for citizenship (Teitelbaum, 1999). Through their involvement in community reconciliation efforts, children can become advocates and catalysts within their families and communities, energizing reconciliation and nation building efforts (Jackson, 1999). It is by addressing the root causes of conflict and providing realistic opportunities for young people that we can begin to break the inter-generational violence that has resulted in protracted conflicts in many countries today. Finally, as we move forward and support actions to prevent all forms of violence in peace and in war through UNICEF, we must not forget that at the centre of all our efforts are individual children whose lives hang in the balance of our actions. We cannot wait another minute. When Graca Machel prepared her report in 1995, she was asked by a child, ââ¬Å"How long will it take before things get better? A month, a year? â⬠Today that child is an adult and another generation of children is asking the same question (UNICEF, 2008). How long will it take? The life of a child leaves no second chance. That is the urgency that must drive us in our efforts to make a real difference, a lasting difference. References: Alston, Philip, et al. , Children, rights, and the law. EssayI) Introduction Robotic technology has enabled the US military to use autonomous robots (or unmanned systems, UMS) in modern warfare. In the war with Iraq, the US military sent 12000 ground robots at the end of 2008 (P. W. Singer). One of the most popular robots used in Iraq is the iRobot Packbot, an unmanned ground vehicle, which is capable of detecting and destroying improvised explosive devices. Exploiting robots in warfare can save lives of many human soldiers. Moreover, robots are faster, have longer endurance, high precision and immunity to chemical and biological weapons (Ronald Arkin). In the National Defense Act of 2001 the U.S. Congress, obviously impressed by the potential of robots saving lives on the battlefield, established the requirement for one-third of the ground vehicles and one-third of the deep-strike aircraft in the military to be robotic within the decade. Consequently, in the ââ¬Å"Fiscal Year 2009-2034 Unmanned Systems Integrated Roadmapâ⬠of the office of the secretary of defense showed the four categories that will be focused on are reconnaissance and surveillance, target identification and designation, counter-mine and explosive ordnance disposal, and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear detection (Stew Magnuson). As for now, most of the robot soldiers in the field are not fully autonomy. They are controlled by human soldier operators. However, the pressure of wars and the superior advantage of robots which can make decisions on their own will shift the interest in developing autonomous robots. In battle field, the time to decide whether or not to take action is too short that it would be impractical that a robot must send a signal to an operator and wait for the permission to fire (Ronald Arkin)... ...gner, A.R., and Duncan, B., ââ¬Å"Responsibility and Lethality for Unmanned Systems: Ethical Pre-Mission Responsibility Advisementâ⬠. Maybe, itââ¬â¢s because we often see math as merely a series of problems to be solved and rules to master and apply. Calculus is one of the branches of math that some students like me find intimidating to learn. This paper aims to establish an appreciation and better understanding of calculus by reviewing its historical groundings and giving the practical application of the subject. The foundation of calculus did not just appear in history, in fact, mathematicians had encountered numerous difficulties and problems that had led to their desire to find ways in which to offer solutions. It is the case that although Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz were the ones to formulate the theorems of Calculus we know today, a fair share of mathematicians began utilizing concepts of calculus as early as the greek period. Calculus was developed from ancient Greek geometry. It was mainly use to Democritus calculated the volumes of pyramids and cones, probably by regarding them as consisting of infinitely many cross-sections of infinitesimal (infinitely small) thickness, and Eudoxus and Archimedes used the ââ¬Å"method of exhaustionâ⬠, finding the area of a circle by approximating it arbitrarily closely with inscribed polygons. In fact it was Archimedes who was the first person to find an approximation of the area of the circle using the ââ¬Å"method of exhaustionâ⬠; it was the first samples of integration and led to the approximated values of ?(pi). In line with the developments in the field of theoretical mathematics, it can be said that mathematicians encountered their own difficulties with math problems before they were able to actually find the answers through calculus. It was not until the 16th century when mathematicians found the need to further develop the methods that could be used to calculate areas bounded by curves and spheres.Johannes Kepler for example had to find the area of the sectors of the ellipse in order for him to proceed with his work in planetary motion. He was lucky enough to find the answer in two tries despite the then crude methods of calculus. Imagine if he was unable to compute the area of ellipses during that time, chances are there would have been a delay in the development of astronomical science. It was through Keplerââ¬â¢s exploration of integration that laid groundwork for the further study of Cavalieri, Roberval, and Fermat. The latter especially contributed a great deal to calculus by generalizing the parabola and hyperbola as y/a = (x/b)2 to (y/a)n = (x/b)m and y/a = b/x to (y/a)n = (b/x)m respectively. It is the case that some mathematicians (like Joseph Louis Langrange) consider Fermat to be the father of calculus, especially with his formulation of the method used in acquiring the maxima and minima by calculating when the derivative of the function was 0; this method is not far fro m that which we use today in solving such equations. The formulas we use today to determine motion at variable speeds use calculus. Toricelli and Barrow were the first mathematicians to explore the problem of motion by implicitly applying the inverse of differentiation, integral and derivative as inverses of each other in asserting that the derivative of distance is velocity and vice versa. Newton and Leibniz are considered to be the inventors of calculus because of their discovery of the fundamental theorems of calculus. However though both shares credit for the latter, Newton was able to apply it further showing its use both in his works in physics and planetary motion which are considered the most significant of all his contributions. The three laws of motion echoed if not are born out of the notion that since the world changes and derivatives are the rates of changes, and then the latter becomes pivotal to any scientific endeavor that attempts to understand the world. Newton was a ble to use calculus in determine a lot of things during his time.We must remember though, that in voicing Newton it is good to reminisce his advice that abstractions and concepts donââ¬â¢t stand alone, theyââ¬â¢re pieced together with other ideas to find a solution, an answer. This goes with his Newtonian laws, which if we are to really understand we must see how it relates with his law of gravitational force. Calculus bridges the gaps between theoretical math and the applied sciences/mathematics; if we are to look at it exclusively then we would miss the entire point of why we use it as such fail to realize its true value.Calculus plays a role in the natural, physical as well as the social sciences; it is being employed in solving numerous problems that wishes to determine the maximum and minimum rates of change. It is capable of describing the physical processes that occur around us. It has even been used to solve paradoxes created during the time of Zeno in ancient Greece. It is impossible to imagine how we can be able to understand the world today without the calculus as one of our tools in acquiring knowledge. We may perhaps still be slaves to mystical forces that were claimed to be the cause of change in this world.Mathematics would remain to us mere abstractions if calculus was not introduced to become the mediator of thought and practice. The development of other disciplines would have not followed without first establishing the existence of the fundamental concepts of calculus. Things which in history were thought to be inconceivable were able to have a figure that man can understand and therefore have the capacity to manipulate though not complete control. Students like me get frustrated when trying to solve a mathematical problem and failing once or twice.Reading on the history of calculus made me realize that mathematicians would not have come up with the theorems and methods we use today if they too decided to simply get frustrated. In as mu ch as Calculus teaches you at what rate things change and how the infinite can be understood, one could also learn the value of knowing something even if exclusively it seems unimportant. In order for us to appreciate the subject we must look at it as part of the greater system of knowledge, without it all things would not be coherent. cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874112374231041080.post-486951161960689562020-01-06T01:05:00.001-08:002020-01-06T01:05:02.754-08:00How To Say Let in Spanish Let is one of those English words that can be translated numerous ways in Spanish, because let itself has numerous meanings. Take the example of translating Let me write that down to Spanish. One possibility say, Quiero apuntar eso, which has a literal meaning of I want to write that down. If you wish a more precise translation and indeed are seeking permission to take notes, use Dà ©jame apuntar eso or Dà ©jeme apuntar eso, depending on whether you are speaking in the familiar or formal second person, respectively. Dejar is the most common verb meaning to allow, so what youre saying is allow me to write that down. What is important when translating from one language to another is to look for the meaning of what you want to say and translate that rather than attempting to translate words. You simply cannot translate let the same way all the time. And if what you mean by let is I want to, then just say the equivalent of that ââ¬â its much simpler! Choices for Translating ââ¬ËLetââ¬â¢ A few of the verbs you can use to translate let or phrases that use let include liberar (to let go), alquilar (to rent out), avisar (to let someone know), soltar (to let go), fallar (to let down or disappoint), perdonar (to let somebody off, to excuse) and cesar (to let up). It all depends on the meaning of what youre trying to say. And, of course, in English we use let to form first-person plural commands, as in lets leave or lets sing. In Spanish, that meaning is expressed in a special verb form (the same as the first-person plural subjunctive), as in salgamos and cantemos, respectively. Finally, Spanish sometimes uses que followed by a verb in the subjunctive to form an indirect command that can be translated using let, depending on the context. Example: Que vaya à ©l a la oficina. (Have him go to the office, or let him go to the office.) Sample Sentences Here are sentences illustrating possible translations for let: El gobierno cubano liberà ³ al empresario. (The Cuban government let the entrepreneur go.)Dà ©jele hablar sin interrupcià ³n. (Let him speak without interruption.)Te comunicaremos si algo ha cambiado. (Well let you know if anything has changed.)Los captores soltaron a los rehenes a las cuatro de la madrugada. (The captors let the hostages free at 4 a.m.)Me fallaba muchà simo. (He let me down a lot.)Vive y dejar vive. (Live and let live.)A mi no me decepciona nadie porque no espero nada de nadie. Nobody lets me down because I dont expect anything from anybody.Mis padres alquilaron un piso en 2013 por 400 euros por semana. (My parents let out a floor in 2013 for 400 euros weekly.)à ¡Me deja en paz! (Let me be alone!)Avà same si no puedes hacerlo. (Let me know if you cant do it.)Por fin aflojà ³ la ira de la tormenta. (The fury of the storm finally let up.)Hay ciertos amigos a los que no quiero dejar entrar en mi casa. (There are some friends I dont want to let into my house.)D esde entonces, se desmejorà ³ y crecià ³ su abatimiento fà sico y moral. Brown v. Board of Education deemed it harmful to African Americans to be segregated. Integration of public schools did not happen until Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. The ruling of Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education mandated school districts to bus students to different schools so integration would be possible (Wilson). President Lyndon B. Johnson was also a key part in education reform during this time period, which will be discussed later. The federal government became involved to create additional benefits for low-income students. Head Start and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) were created to reduce poverty by providing equal opportunities for all students (Cross). Leading up to the 21st Century quality of education finally was addressed. In 1983 under the Reagan administration A Natio n at Risk, was published and exposed the poor quality of education in the United States. A Nation at Risk noted that 23 million American adults were functionally illiterate, 13% of all 17 year olds were functionally illiterate, and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) demonstrated a significant decline in English and Math scores. Although Photoshop was originally intended for good uses, it has a negative effect on todayââ¬â¢s society. Photographers and other artist use Photoshop to enhance the quality of their work, whereas, the media uses it to alter images beyond fictional standards. Photoshop can alter someoneââ¬â¢s entire appearance, and basically create a whole new person. On a daily basis, we see a multitude of images of what is supposed to be ââ¬Å"flawless perfectionâ⬠through many different media sources. The media is held most accountable for these actions. People have an issue of trying to recreate the perfection that they often see. This has become a major concern for our society today. The sad truth is that it is not just females whose ideas are affected by body imaging and photoshop. Males often are attracted to these ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠looks that they see. First I will write about positive things which I found helped me finishing this case study on time. Case study started on 17 th September, when I went ward for this I was clear of my objectives and goal to achieve. I got chance to select any patient I want from any where I choose, so I have chosen the patient from same ward I m working. Therefore I was very familiar with patients and their relatives, especially disease condition of the patients. I have chosen a patient whom I was caring since her admission. But for the case study I needed more than just routine caring but patient. Thus very easily that patient has given verbal consent to make case study on her disease condition. I built good rapport with the patient which made it easily to communicate and give health education to her. Iââ¬â¢m really thankful for her doing that. In ward other nurses also tried to make those 5 days duties easily for me and helped a lot in my work.Similarly my lecturer helped me a lot during the case study, she came to ward when I was doing case studying explained objectives and gave time to clear doubts. She watched closely during the course and advised to finish when there was time. She advised lot of time to plan and organize the time. However there were some difficulties like doing duty and part time studying is hard. I canââ¬â¢t give as much time I give for studies. During this case study period, in some weeks I got only one off mostly that will be on Sunday, and sometime called for duty because of lack of nurses. I tried my best to finish before, so that I can give for feedback. But duties were too hectic and too tiring, some days I was unable to touch the assignment. Unavailability of books from library after reserving that book for long time most difficult situation I faced. Similarly inaccessibility for hinari and ebsco full text researches was also a problem I faced. Lot of my time I spend on searching for articles, researches and journal for literature review. Likewise because of unable to manage time, ACLS classes and exam took lot of time which I could have given to case study. Unfortunately, I m not very good at managing my time, I believe this was biggest problem. So for future improvement I must learn how to manage my time. There were so many other interruptions during the case study time. Although there was a lot of work in preparing this assignment, improvements always can be made. If again I got chance to write this type this of assignment, I will start writing case study same day I start caring the patient. This time i started writing case after finishing five days of clinical. I thought I can write this with in few days. But know I realized that if I would want best out this assignment I would have given enough time for this, prepared more, and organized. cresdysmumis1975http://www.blogger.com/profile/15454249597882961177noreply@blogger.com0
